Normal vs fatty pancreas, an ultrasound comparison

The normal pancreas is relatively hypoechoic to isoechoic on sonography.
Here a case of a normal pancreas.
The head and body are seen well.
Now let's have a look at a case of fatty pancreas. There's also mild fatty liver in case 2:
The pancreas in the 2nd case is brightly echogenic and relatively inhomogenous.
These are the typical findings of fatty pancreas.
So what is fatty pancreas?
  • Fatty pancreas is a condition where the pancreas has an excessive amount of fat.
  • It's usually diagnosed through an ultrasound examination of the abdomen.
  • Obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes are some of the risk factors associated with fatty pancreas.
  • Fatty infiltration of the pancreas can lead to impaired pancreatic function and even chronic pancreatitis.
  • The treatment of fatty pancreas involves managing the underlying risk factors and making lifestyle changes, such as exercise and a healthy diet.
  • In severe cases, medications or surgery may be required.
